Our 28th annual Tribute to Women awards luncheon was held in May at the Andover Country Club, and honored 29 women of remarkable business and community achievement in the Merrimack Valley.
This year's Honorees included a diverse group of women ranging from nurses, entrepreneurs, activists and scientists, to bankers, environmentalists, and business women – each embodying the victory of possibility over limitation. This is very much in keeping with what the YWCA of Greater Lawrence strives to offer community members; programs and services that enable women, children and families to overcome challenges and achieve the empowering skills that result in economic independence and, most importantly, dignity.
These 29 celebrated women inspire not only us, but the community at large to continue our good work. We believe that the achievement they represent and the opportunity we strive to provide will serve as motivation to the women and young people we annually serve. Honoring this group of women who have made a difference for themselves and others serves as an important lesson for us as we work to carry out our mission of creating opportunities for women's growth and leadership while striving to attain a common vision of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
The event this year drew 430 business and community guests and we were fortunate to have Senator Sue Tucker serve as our Honorary Chair this year. She spoke of her continued commitment to and the importance of this event, as well as her dedicated work in supporting women and children's issues when she was a legislator. Keynote Speaker A. G. Breitenstein, VP and General Manager of Provider Markets at Humedica gave a thought provoking and inspiring talk on how move forward when we come to the cross-roads in our lives. A well recognized Boston entrepreneur herself, Ms. Breitenstein shared stories of her work with the homeless and how they overcame various challenges in their own lives. Executive Director, Rebecca A. Hall, felt the event was outstanding. "While it's wonderful and exciting to recognize the accomplishments, advancements and work of our Honorees," she said, "the speeches from former Senator Tucker and Ms. Breitenstein gave special messages to keep us all inspired and willing to continue the work we do." Additionally, Deputy Director Mary O'Brien gave an emotional talk on the work we do with survivors of domestic violence at our YWCA Fina House.
Board President, Margaret Crockett, gave special attention to recognizing Philips Healthcare, who stepped up this year to serve as our Event Sponsor. She also recognized our special Presenting Sponsor, Pfizer, Inc., as well as our Special and Benefactor Sponsors including: Independent Tire & Auto, SoLatina, Unifirst, Wheelabrator of North Andover, Bay Path College, The Saving Bank, Holy Family Hospital, All Brand New England, Sovereign Bank and People's United Bank. |
